About this breed
The Dachshund, often affectionately known as the “wiener dog,” “hot dog,” “sausage dog,” or “doxie,” is easily recognized by its long body and short legs. Originally bred in Germany, their primary purpose was to be independent hunters, taking on badgers and other formidable prey.
Interestingly, Dachshunds are not only capable of solo hunting but also excel in packs. Historically, packs of Dachshunds were used to chase and hunt larger game, such as wild boar. The breed’s name, “Dachshund,” translates to “badger dog” in German, reflecting their specialized hunting role.
With a lineage dating back over 600 years, Dachshunds have long been a national symbol of Germany. The American Kennel Club (AKC) officially recognized the breed in 1885, admitting them to the Stud Book and classifying them as a member of the Hound Group. Since then, Dachshunds have grown in popularity and remain one of the most beloved dog breeds worldwide.
